Book Review
"ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD is an interesting story. Hargrove's writing style is very simplistic and flows smoothly. The book is well written and reflects careful editing. It is obvious the author thoroughly researched the environment and professions of his characters when providing details."

Former bookstore owner finds passion in writing
Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005
by Alan King
Special to the Gazette
After being a bookstore owner for seven years, Frederick Hargrove discovered his passion for writing and publishing.
‘‘It’s a passion I had yet to discover after my bookstore [Upper Nile Books] closed in 1999,” said Hargrove, of Upper Marlboro.
He then transformed his bookstore into Nile River Press, which publishes books by African American writers.
His first book, ‘‘All That Glitters Is Not Gold (Nile River Press 2005),” is about an African American corporate executive who pursues his dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Along the way, he’s caught up in a love triangle. In dealing with the three women, he not only negotiates and navigates his corporate life but his personal life as well.
‘‘It’s really a novel that’s culturally thought provoking, full of romance, incredibly sexy, and suspense filled,” Hargrove said.
The novel is not autobiographic, the author said, but based on a lifetime of observations.
Hargrove hopes his story will educate young people on the importance of entrepreneurship and get them interested in starting their own businesses.
‘‘We should use our God-given talent [and] our own educational skills to become more entrepreneurial in our efforts in life,” he said.
Hargrove is a member of the Black Writer’s Guild of Maryland, based in Baltimore. It was at those workshops where he learned character development and how to self-publish his own novel. He then took a creative writing course at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) to get some insight on the writing process. He also bought several books on how to write a novel.
Hargrove said he believes no one can teach you how to write, they can only expose you to it.
‘‘The best way to become a good writer is to read as much as you can,” he said. ‘‘If you look at people like James Baldwin, they were just veracious readers in the library. You will find that great writers are great readers as well.”
Hargrove has been working on this book for three years because he did not know what direction to take it.
‘‘I played with it the first year, wrote a few chapters [then] put it down,” he said. After starting on it again, ‘‘it actually took me somewhere between nine to 10 months to finish it.”
His novel is carried in four bookstores: Reprint Books at L’Enfant Plaza, Caravan Books and Import in Oxon Hill, Karibu Books, and Borders in the Boulevard at the Capital Centre in Largo.
He also has a distribution deal with Brooklyn-based A&B Books, a national distributor.
Hargrove’s book is being reviewed by Essence Magazine and Quarterly Black Review.
‘‘At this point in my life, I want to be a writer and publisher,” Hargrove said. ‘‘[It’s] something I like and it fits me well.”
He is preparing for a 12-city book tour, which includes the District, Philadelphia, New York, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Detroit.
In the meantime, he will be at Prince George’s County Community College’s Blues Festival Sept. 18, the Capital Book Fest in Largo on Oct. 1, and at a book signing at Borders in Largo Oct. 8.
